Staten Island Chuck (a.k.a Charles G. Hogg) is the borough’s resident groundhog. He lives at the Staten Island Zoo in West Brighton. And he has an excellent record when it comes to predicting whether we’ll experience an early spring or six more weeks of dark, blustery winter.

NYC’s favorite rodent (after Pizza Rat) is back and ready to predict the weather! Groundhog Chuck is almost set to emerge from his cozy den at the Staten Island Zoo with the answer to a question brewing on everyone’s mind: Will the Big Apple see an early spring?

The day eventually evolved into what we know it today. In 1886, Groundhog Day was acknowledged for the first time in Punxsutawney by a local newspaper, Weathers Wags, according to the club. In 1887, the first official pilgrimage to see Phil on Gobbler’s Knob while he made his predictions were made.
