It's wild to think about it, but the Dexter franchise has been with us nearly two decades, since the original series debuted back in 2006. While the Dexter finale was controversial, two more shows have followed: the sequel New Blood and the new prequel Original Sin (both of which are streaming with a Paramount+ subscription with Showtime).

Original Sin ended on a high note over the weekend, measuring a finale audience that grew 27% over the December premiere. The finale tallied 2.68M global viewers on Paramount+ with Showtime, according to Paramount Global.

Original Sin ends with Deb (Molly Brown) deciding to forego a college volleyball scholarship to follow in her father and brother’s footsteps at Miami Metro, setting up the intricate web of lies Dexter must weave to keep his cop sister off his blood-soaked trail.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips, who is currently working on 'Dexter: Resurrection,' just set up another season of the prequel series with that ending: "We didn't know everything going in, and still don't."

Original Sin Season 2? Paramount+ hasn’t officially renewed the series, but these are early days, so no worries yet. Also, a slight cliffhanger makes the situation look promising. When quizzed, showrunner Clyde Phillips revealed to Hollywood Reporter that the cliffhanger wasn’t always in the cards.

After letting the police captain escape in Episode 9, we see Dexter (Patrick Gibson) follow Spencer to a massive ship, where he’s holding his son. Realizing that Dexter has caught up with him, Spencer floods the chamber where Nicky is chained, forcing the serial killer into a choice — save a child or let his urge to kill take priority.

Is it even a Dexter finale without a bit of bloodshed, a big twist, and a setup for the next season? Of course not. Dexter: Original Sin took a page from the original series' book in its finale on Feb. 14, shaking up the show ahead of what we can only hope will be a second season (at time of press, Showtime had yet to confirm an official return).
